Why it matters

Why cow protection matters

In the Vedic tradition the cow is honored as Go-Mata — Mother Cow — because her milk nourishes society just as a mother's milk nourishes her child. A civilization that protects its cows and its brāhmaṇas is naturally peaceful, healthy and spiritually oriented. Cow protection is not sentiment — it is a living, practical foundation for simple living and high thinking.

The cow gives milk without being coerced, and the bull works the land without asking anything in return. To repay this friendship with slaughter is, Śrīla Prabhupāda taught, the greatest ingratitude of modern civilization.

One should give protection to the cows. Milk is like nectar, and the ghee obtained from milk is required for performing great sacrifices.

At New Madhuvan

Cow protection at New Madhuvan

Our goshala is designed around the animals rather than around production — spacious stalls, daily grooming, fresh water, organic pasture, gentle hand-milking, and full retirement care for elderly cows and working bulls. It is part of the single 60-decare sanctuary of New Madhuvan, shared with the temple, the gardens and Vrajaloka, set deep in nature and far from the noise of the city.

Daily care

The daily rhythm of go-seva

Morning care

Before sunrise the cows are greeted, cleaned, and offered fresh hay. Milking is done by hand, quietly, with mantras — never rushed, never mechanical.

Feeding and shelter

Free grazing on organic pasture during the season; locally grown hay, alfalfa and grains through winter. Warm, dry stalls, fresh bedding and shade in the heat.

Health & veterinary

A visiting veterinarian and trained caretakers monitor every animal. Ayurvedic preparations complement modern care. Detailed medical records are kept privately by the caretakers.

Retirement for life

Older cows and bulls are never sold or slaughtered. They remain honored members of the community until their natural passing.
Milk

Milk from protected cows

Every drop of milk from our cows is offered first to Śrī Śrī Rādhā-Krishna on the altar and then shared as sanctified prasādam. The calf is always allowed to drink first — a non-negotiable rule of the goshala.

Individual cow profiles are being prepared.

We will publish each cow with her name, approximate age, personality and public story only once the caretakers have approved the text and the photograph. Private medical notes remain internal.
